“You’re sure it’s a good idea to tell the blocks we know nothing about the murders?”

The wind in her hair, Rayne matched Sy stride for stride. They were on the highest of the elevated walkways, and there was still no sign of William and the others. “I’m not sure we have any other choice. Also, I think people react better to a harsh reality than they do sugared lies. Especially when the truth comes out, which it will do eventually.”

“Point taken.” Sy glanced back towards the farm. “How do you think they’re getting on?”

“Dunno.”

“Do you think they’re coming back?”

It threw Rayne off a step. Did she? “Dunno.”

“And how do you feel about telling the others about Eleanor?”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“There’s always a choice.”

“Okay, the consequences of not telling them were much worse. I just hope they keep it to themselves.”

They entered a dining room with about ten people inside. The latecomers for breakfast. If that was a name they could give to their measly portions. Every person in the room turned her way. They made Katrina’s resentment seem tame. Half of them were visibly nauseated by her presence. One person even pushed away the remains of their pitiful rations.

Sy wagged his finger at them. “You lot need to appreciate what Rayne’s doing for you.”

“That’s enough, Sy.”

“She’s been working tirelessly to help.”

“I can speak for myself.”

The man who’d shoved his breakfast away stood up. “Why should we trust her with anything? She’s a woman. How do we know it wasn’t her knocking for Bob?”

Rayne caught Sy’s hand before he could raise it and point at them again.

“And do you seriously think if we know anything, we’ll come to you?” The man stepped away from his bench and closer to Rayne. “Your group’s the last people we’d trust.”

“I understand that’s how you feel.” Rayne pressed her hands together palm to palm. Again. What a tit. “But please know I’m doing what I can.”

The man lunged forward.

As Rayne jumped back to avoid his attack, Sy swung for him, catching him clean on the chin and knocking him on his arse. Over him in a flash, he threw three more punches, the man’s head flopping from the blows.

“Sy! What are you doing?”

The people stared at Rayne like she was the one who’d just handed out the beating.

“Sy!” She caught his hand, but he twisted free and punched the man again.

“Fucking hell, Sy!” She hooked her arm around his slim waist and dragged him back. “Leave him alone.”

The centre of the room’s attention, Rayne stood panting and turned on the spot. And why shouldn’t they feel disdain for her? Even a solitary hooded teenager came in from a walkway and shook her head.

A tall woman with white hair backed towards the stairwell like she might be the next one to get attacked. “Of course he’s sticking up for her. But while he might trust her, we don’t all think with our penises.”

Rayne stamped her foot. “What?!”

“She’s right.” Another woman followed the first into the stairwell.
